| ABOUT ADOPTING A DOG: Adopting a pet means a life commitment for a precious life. Are you able to provide a stable home for the rest of his/her life? Please THINK before you CALL. All MHS dogs have been spayed or neutered (age and health permitting), vaccinated, and given a microchip. Adoption fees are shown in each dog's profile. If you wish to know more about a pet please contact their foster parent directly as per the information in the pet's profile. If you are unable to reach the foster parent after several tries then please call our main line at 905-271-0883 and leave a message. Sometimes people ask which pets are hardest to find adoptive homes for. They are the older dogs and the larger dogs. The pets at the bottom of this page are those who have been with us the longest. |

We call her the little wiggle bum! With her adorable crooked nose and curly-haired tail, Prisciall will instantly steal your heart (and if you let her, your couch!). Woody - I'm a handsome, 38 lb, 3-year-old, male Labrador Retriever mix. With my charcoal coat & white 'shirt' & paws, I'm a 'Tuxedo Dog'! Good natured, well-mannered, obedient, yet playful, & displaying an 'aim to please you' attitude, all make me a great family pooch! I love to meet people respectfully, walk nicely on a leash, & respond to the commands 'come', 'sit', & 'go lie down'. I get along well with the other 3 dogs & 2 cats in Mom Sue's home. I know that I look skinny, but I didn't survive well in the pound, & lost weight. Now that I'm in a loving home, & feel safe, I'm gaining my weight back. Ritchie - I am a Labrador X, about 1 yr old, male. Heres a bio by my foster mom: "Ritchie is an affectionate and smart boy . He loves walks and smelling grass seems to relax him . He is energetic and needs at least one long walk daily. . He is playful and if you run he will run beside you and act silly . He initially needs reassurance when he is startled by loud sounds or new or busy places. I have been exposing him to busy areas and he is fine as long as his walker leads him . He knows sit, stay, heel and lie down so far. Being able to run free in a yard or field helps him be a good and happy boy. He needs an experienced dog owner ashes still in need of training, but he is definitely a fast learner. Ritchie is friendly with dogs and loves to play on dog parks. he is also learning to love cats with some success. I will miss his big smiles and hugs but wants to see him in a home where he can get all the love and attention he deserves." Rescued June 2010. They are extremely friendly, nice tempered, intelligent, playful puppies . Very affectionate and loving. Good with dogs and with people. Never any sign of meanness. They are very responsive and sit and come on command . They might be a bit boisterous for small children, but would certainly be wonderful for children over about 8 years old. Sabrina - I am a Husky mix ,female, about 9 yrs old. Sadly my owner passed away and I ended up at the pound scheduled to be euthanized. Thanks to MHS who came to my rescue. Trinity - I am a 7 year old Mini Schnauzer/Mini Pinscher mix ,approximately 26 lbs. Sadly I have to look for a new home due to allergy of the child. Heres a bio by my owner: "We’ve had Trinity since birth and she is dearly loved. She’s a very mature and loyal dog that is house trained. She’s a wonderful companion and can walk well on a leash. She’s a low to medium energy dog that enjoys going for walks and chasing after tennis balls in the backyard. Rose is an absolute delight and loves everyone she meets including dogs and cats. Wilbur - I am a hound X, male, 8- 9 yrs old, weighing about 55 lbs. Here's a bio by my foster mom: "Wilbur is a great dog! He is house-trained, crate trained, excellent with all other dogs, great with cats and very friendly! He's a very easy-going "do anything to me" kind of guy. Wilbur is well behaved in the house (but can be a bit of a food thief) and is happy to curl up on a dog bed. Outside he loves to sniff and explore, and likes going on walks. Being a hound, a fenced yard is a must! Don't let his age fool you, hounds are a hardy breed, and other then a few "older dog" lumps and bumps Wilbur is healthy and happy and very deserving of a loving forever home! Tommy is friendly and socia\lised with adults but he doesn't seem to like children so would need an adult home and be well supervised when out in public. Toby Taco Bell -- I'm an engaging 15 lb 6 - 7 year-old male Chihuahua mix. A loving, energetic, & sweet little guy, I love to walk in the neighbourhood on a leash, respond to the sit & come commands, & enjoy back scratches. For those, I bestow soft, slobbery kisses! Raw vegetables, apples, & meat are great! Initially, I'm kinda shy & cautious, but will warm up to people once I feel that I can trust you. I didn't get off to the best start in life. My elderly parents didn't teach me good house or people manners, & when they went into assisted living, I had to move. It was difficult & scary, so I've been in 'rehab' with Mom Sue for the past 5 months. I'm pretty good now, love to be praised, & am ready to look for my forever home. Patience - I am a German Shepherd X, female 10-12 yrs old. Aint I cute with this endearing "one ear up, one ear down" look? There is nothing wrong with it; I was just born with a floppy ear which I wave to greet people! My foster family thinks it’s cute. I lived in a shelter for more than a year and was almost on death row until MHS came to my rescue. Despite this ordeal, I have a great spirit. You would never know my age by looking at me as many think I am only 3 years old. I am affectionate to all humans, whether kid or adult. I simply love getting in between my young friends to have them pet and play with me. I have learned to sit, stay and give paw, walk at heel and take treats gently from those who like to spoil me. I was brought up alone so I don’t do well with other animals, and should be the only animal in my permanent home. For my age I am in good shape except for a little arthritis. Crystal – I am a Burmese Mountain Dog Collie X, 8-9 yrs old. approx 40 lbs. I am a very loving, intelligent and loyal dog. I have been neglected for most of my life; yet somehow still find a way to love people. I am extremely friendly and have no aggression at all; I love kids and other animals. I have a bit of arthritis in my hip and love to walk on carpet rather than hard surfaces. I have a hard time with stairs, but will persevere if it means being with you. I don’t hear very well either, but have come a custom to basic hand signals which I am learning very quickly. I really enjoy my daily walks and walk excellent on lead. I like shorter walks but more of them. I enjoy my daily naps on my blanket, my occasional bone, and mostly peanut butter. I am completely house trained. I am well behaved when left along at home. Spike - I am a black Labrador Retriever, male , 7 years old, a big and squishy boy. Heres a bio by my foster mom: " Spike is a large boy who weighs over 100 hlbs, ough he is a big boy by body type ....we think he may have had his paws in the cookie jar one too many times. Bailey - I am a Hound X, approx. 7 years old , 50 to 55lbs. I am a very gentle and loving dog . I am living with a toddler whom I am fine even when he pull s my ears or tail ! Ruby - I am a 3 yr old Black Labrador X, female, about 75 lbs, a tall and slender girl. Heres a bio by my foster parent: "An afternoon with Ruby is a reminder to stop and smell the roses. Ruby has a zest for life and an enthusiasm that is contagious. This fun loving girl loves to play ball, loves to go walking , loves to play chase , pretty much any activity Ruby does whole heartedly. This girl has not known a kind life so far yet still loves everyone and is enthralled with the littlest things. Ruby will require professional obedience classes so that she can gain socialization while developing a strong skill-set. Teddy - I am a pure breed Chow Chow , male, about 10 years old and approximately 55 lb. I used to look like a Teddy Bear, but now I am like a lion as I got my hair shaved in Summer time. At home, I am calm, well-behaved and housetrained I therefore do not need much space. An apartment would be fine for me too. Like most Chow Chows, I am very loyal to my family. I am good with all family members from kids to seniors. If you want a family dog as well as a watch dog, I am the one, as I am "knowsy" (nosy)! I like to sniff around, and would bark if a stranger is at the door. I normally check around the house twice nightly to ensure everything is fine.! For my age I am still active and definitely need two good long walks daily. I am happy to run with you or sit nicely and quietly by your side. Riggs - I am a toy Poodle ,male, about 10 years old, a very small cute sweetie. Heres a bio by my foster parent: "Riggs is a very loving boy , good with children and loving with any human he comes in contact with. He is well behaved, walks well, and is house trained. He does love to cuddle up to you and enjoys his walks I give him. Riggs needs a special diet to prevent formation of stones, as he had bladder stones developed in the past. . As long as hes on the diet it would prevent the stones from coming back. He is in good health right now . Riggs is a very special loving dog and needs a special loving person to take care of him. Sandy - I am a Dachshund/Labrador retriever mix, male, about 3 yrs old, approxi 40 lbs. Heres a bio by my foster parent: "Sandy is very affectionate and loving with his “human pack” and gets along well with all members of our family. He is a unique looking dog with the face and body of a retriever and the legs of a dachshund. We think Sandy came from an abusive home and was not socialized as a youngster. Due to this, he has a fear aggression that needs to be corrected. He has been working very hard on his fears and is coming along very well. Someone with dog experience who understands dog “psychology” would be best for this intelligent dog as he needs someone to show him proper behaviour. He has adapted very well to family home life, but would be best suited in a home with no small children or large dogs as he shows fear to both. He really loves to be part of the pack, so it would be best if he were not left alone for long periods of time. He is house-trained with a low-average energy level." Bea (aka Daisy) • female • Beagle/Hound (Mix) • 8 years I am a Beagle/Hound mix, about 7 years young, weighing 55 lbs. Here's a bio by my foster mom: "I have had Bea since mid-January. She has come a long way in terms of feeling more secure and settled after being in several homes and shelters since being found in August 2008. She is a great dog; intelligent, quiet, clean and has learned new tricks and good behaviours quite easily. She walks well – on a “loose leash” most of the time. She has no problems with joggers, bikes, skateboards, strollers or noisy kids playing. She doesn’t chase squirrels or rabbits. She has a great time at the dog park, makes new friends easily but is quite happy to go off on her own and explore the scents. She loves to be outside in any weather and benefits from long and/or frequent walks. She is ok being left at home, but would rather be with people. We have a great time walking the hiking trails with my daughter and her dog. Bea lives by her nose more than most dogs (she is a hound!) and would be an excellent candidate for recreational tracking dog. Her musical hound bark gets a lot of attention when she is excited! Bea needs a strong leader who will provide the guidance she is looking for in dealing with uncertain situations. I have been successful in dealing with early food and toy guarding, to the point where it is no longer an issue. She has even learned to get along with the cat (he had to learn as well) and they now have a respectful relationship.
